Thinking about buying a quarter or half cow?
If you’ve been searching for “buy a quarter cow near me,” “how much is half a cow?” or wondering whether buying beef in bulk is actually worth it, you’re in the right place.
Buying a quarter or half cow directly from a local farmer can be one of the easiest ways to fill your freezer with quality beef, know exactly where your food comes from and save money compared with buying the same cuts individually.
At Yajambee Farms, we’re a family-run grass-fed beef farm based at Mount Mee, just over an hour from Brisbane. Our cattle are raised on grass, and our beef is processed and packed through our own on-farm facility before being delivered fresh to families across South East Queensland.
Here’s everything you need to know before buying your first quarter or half cow.
What does buying a quarter cow mean?
When people search for a quarter cow, they’re generally looking to buy a bulk selection of beef equivalent to approximately one quarter of an animal.
At Yajambee Farms, our quarter beef option is called the Mount Mee Quarter — approximately 50kg of packaged beef.
Rather than receiving one giant quarter of an animal that you somehow need to deal with at home, your beef arrives:
- Professionally butchered
- Vacuum sealed
- Clearly labelled
- Packed into practical meal-size portions
- Fresh, never frozen
You simply unpack your boxes and put the beef straight into your freezer. No home butchering required!
How much does a quarter cow cost?
Our Mount Mee Quarter is $1,275, which is only $25.50/kg based on a 50kg pack. You reserve your order with a $500 deposit.
Importantly, you’re paying for the packaged beef you actually receive. This is something worth checking whenever you’re comparing bulk beef prices.
Some bulk beef is advertised using dressed or hanging weight, which can include weight that doesn’t ultimately end up in your freezer.
At Yajambee Farms, we keep it simple. You pay for the beef you take home. Here’s why we price the way we do.
What do you get in a quarter cow?
One of the best things about buying a quarter cow is the variety. Rather than filling your freezer with just mince or steaks, you receive a selection of cuts from across the animal.
Your Mount Mee Quarter includes a combination of:
- 5–7 packs of T-bone
- 6–8 packs of rump
- 4 or more rib eye on the bone
- 2 eye fillets
- 5–7 packs of Y-bone
- 3–4 silversides
- 1–2 each of the roasts — topside, blade and rolled rib
- 1–2 briskets
- 4–6 packs each of diced beef and beef strips
- 4–6 packs of osso bucco
- 3–4 packs of ribs
- 4–6 packs of BBQ steak
- 5–7kg each of mince and sausages
There are 2 steaks per pack, except rib eye on the bone, which is 1 per pack at approximately 800g each. No two animals are identical, so the exact ratio of cuts varies slightly between orders.
How much is half a cow?
Our half beast is The Carnivore — approximately 100kg of packaged beef at $25/kg, or around $2,500, reserved with a $900 deposit.
You get roughly double of everything above, and one thing the quarter doesn’t include: with a half, you choose how the butcher processes each cut. It’s a good option for larger families, or for splitting with a neighbour.
You’ll need around 75 litres of freezer space for a quarter, and around 150 litres for a half.
Delivery across Brisbane and South East Queensland
We only deliver within South East Queensland — keeping it local means fewer food kilometres and a stronger local food community. Free delivery applies on orders of 20kg or more, which covers both the quarter and the half.
Once you’ve ordered, we’ll email to confirm and let you know when your beef will be ready. We confirm your final weight and total a few days before delivery.
